Why I’ll Still Pick DVDs Over Netflix: Rediscovering the Art of Patience

, ,

It is a Sunday morning and I opted for a morning coffee with my moka pot.

however my inability to sit still and patiently watch the pot had me realise something.

we live in a time where we have forgotten the art of patience.

And I say art, because that is what it is.

The ability to sit still and simply observe.

Given that everything around us provides us with instant gratification, we get angsty when we are required to wait more than a few minutes for the end result. But I often forget that I grew up in a time when dial-up Internet existed.

The truth is, time moved slower when we were kids and that is largely because we were patient.

Patient enough to wait for our favourite cartoon to start at 4pm. and patient enough to observe the way the sunlight played with the leaves.

All of this made me realise how fortunate I was to grow up in the 90s/early 2000s, because it was the golden era of patience, anticipation and childlike joy.

So whilst we may not be able to revive the flip phones again (largely because of the shitty incompatability with modern day apps). I do believe that we can start embracing the art of patience again by pursuing hobbies that don’t offer instant gratification.

It may be hard at first and you will probably feel the effects of a withdrawal. But I promise you that it will help you feel as though time has slowed down.

And who knows. With the steady rise in costs for streaming services, we might just go back to blu-rays again.
